Though we started collecting only Zuni fetishes in the mid to late 1990's, once we saw the work of Salvador Romero and learned he was a Cochiti Pueblo artist, on the next trip to New Mexico, we traveled to Cochiti. I can't remember how we learned where his house was, maybe we stopped at a visitor's center or something. But, in any case, we learned where he lived and drove to his house hoping to meet and buy some of his work. When we found the house, there was a Sheriff's car in the driveway. We looked at each other and decided maybe today was not the best time to call. So we left, never having the opportunity to meet Mr. Romero. Later, much later, we learned that he WAS the Sheriff and that's why his car was parked there. We made a lot of dumb mistakes in those days but that has to be the most amusing one.
I have four Salvador Romero carvings. I'd like them to stay together if possible. If they don't sell as a group initially, then I will sell them individually. So, let me know if you are interested in any of the four individually, should the group not sell.
This carving is a wolf and all four are made of volcanic tufa stone of varying shades. Tufa is a soft, grainy stone that does not take a polish. Part of the charm of Salvador's work is the rustic appeal of the stone, but more importantly is the simple, fluid nature of his profiles. Animals and birds are carved realisticly but without detail or inlay. They have a profound impact on the viewer - especially in a group. Which is part of the reason I want to keep them together if possible. That, and because they have been together for almost three decades.
This wolf has a beautiful posture, facing forward with ears perked in interest - fully alert. I am not familiar with his later practices, but these carvings were all made in the late 1990's or before 2002 when I purchased them from a collector friend who was going to concentrate on collecting pottery. They have been in my collection since about 2009.
