From the beginning, Dave was a huge fan of Sandra Quandelacy's work. In fact, on our first trip to Zuni, she was one of the people we wanted to meet. But, in the end, the only Quandelacy we did meet was Stuart. He also was carving maidens and he and Dave struck up a friendship and Dave supplied him with some amazing shells that we picked up as finished carvings on a later trip.

Despite not being able to make a personal connection with Sandra, he continued to seek out her work when we visited. This maiden is from his collection. Carved from a beautiful piece of gold-lipped (on one side) Mother of pearl, she is tall and lean. The golden side is carved as a robed maiden, while the pearl side is carved as a corn maiden. Both maidens wear intricately carved tablitas (ceremonial headdresses) and have inlay of turquoise, coral and lapis. The eyes are inked, rather than inlayed.

This is a stunning example of the beautiful work created by Sandra. Though the shell (by nature, of course) is thin, these girls are very stable and stand alone quite well. That being said, if you're in an earthquake or kitty cat zone, a bit of museum putty might be a wise choice.Unsigned. Carved prior to 2002.
