Michael Chavez Cottonwood Snake Video
We bought this colorful little cottonwood twig rattlesnake twenty plus years ago in Zuni at Pueblo Trading Post. I distinctly remember
seeing a whole colorful den of them on the glass shelves. For a while we couldn't remember the maker. Then we ran across a photo of a painted snake in the McManis' book, and the artist is Michael Chavez.
I said in an earlier post that I love how nothing goes to waste in Zuni. This is a little crooked stick that Michael
picked up, visualized a snake, polished and carved the head and tail, and then exquisitely painted in bright colors. He's really wonderful.
Some people can't get past the idea of a snake, but to the Zuni people they're remarkable because they are able to exist in our world and also the underworld. The represent rebirth and change. (Think of shedding your skin ..)
I'm personally fascinated with snakes as long as I see them first. Remind me to tell you a funny chicken snake story, though .. :)
