This beautiful dish is one of two that we are currently offering by Zuni artist, Kent Banteah. At the time (2000-01), Kent was carving fetishes along with his brothers Terry (d.) and Sedrick (d.). Sometime later, his other brother, Garrett (d.) became manager of the Pueblo of Zuni Trading Post where we made the purchase of these two dishes.
Made from locally mined clay and mica (shiny particles), Kent has painted an extremely elegant and elaborate maze of geometric puebloan designs. It's really stunning in its detail. We used these two dishes as display along with our large table fetishes. They are both in perfect condition with no known flaws. Kent has signed the bottom of this dish.
Since there are no known pieces with which to compare either of these Banteah pieces, we attempted to locate other works with similar designs. We found none! Kent was obviously very innovative, not only with his shape and design, but with his spontaneous and freehand painting. Each of them is exquisite and .. rare.
