Rowena Him is the sister of famed Zuni fetish carver, Herbert Him. We only met her once, but we learned she was a potter and (at the time) was married to Randy Nahohai(1956-2017). Now their son, Jaycee (pictured as a infant) is an award winning potter himself.
L-R, Milford Nahohai, Randy Nahohai with infant son, Jaycee, Josephine Nahohai and Rowena Him, 1985
Having been part of the Nahohai family, we are sure that Rowena was taught the craft by her mother in law, Josephine, her husband and his brother, Randy and Milford. Josephine became a potter in the 1950's when her jewelry sales slowed. She was part of a revival of sorts led by Daisy Hooee and classes were taught to the women of the Pueblo at the Zuni High School.
This is a canteen, made by hand from all natural materials. The pigments are natural clays. Typical puebloan motifs grace both sides of the canteen. It's wonderfully made and in perfect condition with no known cracks or flaws. Rowena signed and dated the bottom, "R Him '98".
