order for this Chili bowl.
This is the second of two chili bowls currently being offered. The other chili bowl is here. Both of these bowls were purchased on ebay by Darlene in 1998, basically to add to our southwest decor. This bowl is by Santa Domingo potter, Robert Aguilar. Robert Aguilar was born in 1968 and has been actively potting since the 1970s. He is the nephew of Rafaelita Aguilar and he makes pottery in the Aguilar family tradition. His pots are hand coiled and he uses natural clays, mineral paints and traditional pit firing.
This bowl has a deeper curve to the sides that the previous chili bowl, but they are relatively the same size. There is a picture on both pages showing the two bowls side by side and the difference in their shapes.
This bowl is painted in natural clay slip and black pigment made from mountain bee plant. It features the geometric "tulip" design which symbolizes clouds. Now, Robert is well know for his blackware, but this bowl was probably made in the 70's or 80's. There are no chips or flaws and Robert has signed the bottom of the bowl "Robert Aguilar, SDP".
We are not pottery experts or even seasoned collectors. But we have priced these bowls according the value of those we have found online that are comparable in size and quality.
