As is the case with all the pots listed, these are from our personal collection. We are, by no means, pottery experts. We simply bought each of these pots because we liked them. We knew nothing about the potters at the time of purchase.
This chili bowl is by Santa Domingo potter Vidal Aguilar. And here is what we have learned: From the adobe gallery, "According to Gregory Schaaf, in his book Southern Pueblo Pottery, 2,000 Artist Biographies, "Vidal Aguilar makes some of the largest polychrome ollas at Santo Domingo in the Aguilar family tradition. His pottery is hand coiled and polished. His black paint is a mineral pigment used centuries ago, rather than the typically used Guaco or Mountain Bee plant. His red and white paints are natural clay. He fires his pottery in a pit."
We know that Vidal was born in 1972 and is from a long, distinguised family of potters including the famous Aguilar sisters: Felipita Aguilar Garcia and Asuncion Aguilar Cat.
This chili bowl features a band of rain clouds painted in white slip (cream) and black pigment. The bottom and interior are red. The dimensions of the bowl are below. It is a substantial bowl with no chips or cracks, no known flaws. Vidal has etched his signature on the bottom, "Vidal Aguilar, SDP".
Darlene purchased this and the other chili bowl on ebay in 1997/8. There is no information on the age of the pot. It was likely made in the 1990's as Vidal would have been 18 in 1990. Vidal's work continues to be sought after and a quick search will find numerous galleries that carry his work, as well as auction houses that have been consigned his work.
