We have always considered Herbert Him to be one of the master carvers of Zuni Pueblo. And we were fortunate to meet him on our first trip to Zuni. After that, we became friends and did a lot of business with him as well as just hanging out. One day, we took he and his wife, Johanna, to Chaco Canyon. Chaco is considered to be an ancestral Zuni home north of Zuni Pueblo. Herbert had never been there before, so it was very rewarding watching him experience the pueblo ruins and hearing his visions for future work with petroglyphs and kivas. After that, he really explored puebloan architecture in his work.

This ricolite turtle was likely carved in the late 1990's. It has been in a private collection since that time and came to us as part of an estate. It�s an exceptional carving, a beautiful stone and rendered with Herbert�s usual attention to detail and anatomy. The turtle shell is smoothly carved and etched while the skin has texture and ripples. The claws of all 4 feet on the turtle are detailed and the turtle's head is is nicely carved with turquoise inlaid eyes.

The fetish is signed on the bottom "Herbert Him Zuni". This is a really nice example of Herbert's work and any collector would be lucky to have it in their collection.
