This is a handsome jet mole carved by Randy Lucio. It's an unusual piece from him and looks very similar to a Herb Halate, fluid and smooth with no detail.

Randy went on to carve highly inlaid pieces, so this must be an early creation. Dave bought it in Zuni from a trading post, mostl likely Ashiwi Awan, and it's been in his collection since the late 1990's.

This is a large carving, for a mole, and it's symbolic of the reverance and gratitude for the mole's contribution to the Zuni kitchen gardens where he worked keeping the garden pest free. Moles represent the underworld or nadir, one of the six sacred directions. Signed.
