Years ago (1998?), Dave and I went to Dallas to a Native American Art Festival. We met Amado Pena, William Gutierrez, Moses Brings Plenty (Drummer in Brule', pre-Yellowstone Days!) and Daniel Weahkee and his mom, Sharon. Gibbs Othole and Dee Edaakie were there and we had plans to have dinner with them at Texas de Brazil. It was a great weekend!
We exchanged numbers with Daniel and Sharon and later, we met Manuel and established a buying relationship with them. I revived an old web page about them here, so you can learn a bit more about this branch of the Weahkee family.
We purchased this jet bear from Daniel early in our friendship. It's a fairly large carving, made in his usual boxy style. The photos look like the carving has a crack or some damage to the face. It does not - it is a seam in the jet, but there is no damage or repair to this carving.
Daniel inlaid red coral eyes on the bear and gave it a beautiful inlaid (crushed) turquoise heartline. It also wears a beaded offering bundle made of turquoise, silver beads and juniper berries. I have never seen any other carver use juniper berries before!
It;s a really nice carving from Daniel who is Zuni/Navajo. He and his family do not live on the Zuni reservation. This carving is from the early 2000's .. and we have lost touch with the Weahkee family. I'm not even sure Daniel is carving any more.
Signed on the bottom.
