Leonard Halate's carvings aren't for everyone! Leonard was born in 1914 and passed away in 2001, at the age of 87. He was known for his creative use of found materials which he utilized in his artistic creations. Everything from old hair combs to battery caps or pieces of found metal or plastic were attached to his depictions of dinosaurs, monsters and animals he visualized. We bought this carving from Pueblo of Zuni Arts and Crafts in the late 1990s, because it was the most recognizable carving they offered. It was likely carved in 1997-98, when Leonard would have been 83 or thereabouts. Made from Picasso marble, this chunky buffalo has turquoise inlaid eyes and red coral inlaid nostrils. The horns are also inlaid and appear to be black marble, possibly jet, possibly shell. In typical fashion, the buffalo is rudely formed, not smoothly finished, nor finely polished. The lack of which, of course, only adds to its charm. Interestingly enough, Leonard has etched chin hairs on the buffalo and each of the 4 feet have cloven hooves. So, he did pay attention to detail, he was just selective as to how he used it. If you don�t own a Halate, now is your chance. Obviously, there are only a finite number of Leonard Halate carvings in collection. And we only know of only one other dealer who has his work for sale. It probably goes without saying, but this buffalo is unsigned. It�s ownership history goes from Leonard to Arts and Crafts to us ... and to the next guardian who takes custody.
