This shimmering mother of pearl standing bear was carved by Colvin Peina. At the time, Colvin was known best for his antler pieces. I particularly remember how wonderful his badgers were.
Unfortunately, like so many people in Zuni, Colvin had diabetes. And, not too many years after we first met him, he passed away.
This beautiful bear features his standard pose for a standing bear, with the bear looking over one shoulder, or skyward. Carved from the thickest part of a mother of pearl shell, this bear is small but has nice weight. The eyes and claws are inlaid of jet, and the bear wears a turquoise and coral necklace. Some of Colvin's later pieces were signed but this one is not. We purchased this carving at Pueblo of Zuni Arts and Crafts in the late 90s and it has been in our collection since that time.
