This carving by Pernell Laate is a departure for him. At the time, he was only known for carving antler and the occasional ivory piece, but apparently something about this piece of apple coral drew him in and this little frog and mushroom was created.

The carving features a tiny toad perched on top of a mushroom. It is nicely carved and the frog has an etched body. The frog's eyes are inked, and the piece is signed, though rather illegibly, on the bottom.

Dave bought this piece from Pernell while he was in Zuni on a buying trip in 1998. Sadly, Pernell passed away in 2008.
