The Quandelacy corn maidens are the iconic and most prolific maiden fetishes produced in Zuni. The family has many carving members that create this now famous style of corn maiden. Faye, Sandra, Stuart, Vickie, Chad, and Talia Quandelacy, Rhoda Quam, Daniel Chattin and Kateri Sanchez all create these corn maidens with their own small variations of decorative designs. For instance instead of being incised and etched Rhoda and Faye will sometimes inlay the faces of turquoise, red coral or shell. No matter which of these talented corn maiden artisans carve the figures they are usally outstanding fetishes and oftentimes breathtaking, which is the case here.

Picasso marble comes from Utah and is one of the most popular carving materials available in Zuni. It comes in a variety of colors including grays, blacks, browns, whites and rarely greens, reds and blues. This stone has mostly grays with streaks of black and a seam of browns at the top of the carving. On the base of one side is a pueblo carved in bas-relief and there are stars, spiral triangular designs and two dragonflies etched on the surface of their robes. There are four maidens, two on each long side and a sunface inlay on the narrow side of this wedge-shaped stone. The fit and finish is outstanding on this carving and the fetish is rather large weighing in at a hefty half of a pound!

The eyes, mouths, and stars are inlaid of jet and the necklace pendants and decorative dots are inlaid of Sleeping Beauty turquoise, red coral, Mother-of-pearl and chrysocolla. The sunface is inlaid of red coral, Mother-of-pearl and Sleeping Beauty turquoise. If you are in the market for an elegant corn maiden sculpture for your fetish cabinet this is an excellent choice.
