Ruben and his brother Esteban are members of the Laate Family of Zuni fetish carvers. Contemporary relatives include Florentino Martinez, Ron Laahty, Roscoe Epaloose and Lewis Malie.


Ruben has carved this elaborate owl from tagua nut (phytelephas), a sustainable resource from southern Panama along the Andes to Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru, commonly known as ivory palms or vegetable ivory. Ruben used the inner and outer portions of the nut to create color differences and inlaid the eyes of jet. The fetish is signed "RNajera Zuni NM."
