We met Herbert very early in our travels to Zuni and he became a trusted friend. We always enjoyed our times with Herbert and Johanna.

When we met him in 1997, he was best known for his carvings of bears, often with a shell fish in their mouths. His renderings were so perfect in anatomy and proportion, and their coats were perfectly, finely textured.

This "walking bear" is the perfect example of his ability to portray such a realistic bear in stone. Carved from Picasso marble, the bear is perfectly balanced, alert and has exquisite features. The eyes are inlaid of turquoise and the feet are detailed down to the massive claws.
