This directional set is by Zuni matriarch, Lena Boone. Lena is the granddaughter of Teddy Weahkee (1893-1965). She is very prolific and she has, additionally, taught many of her family to carve as well.
This is a healing directional set as the western direction is represented by a bear, rather than a wolf. The Zuni believe in six sacred directions. The "zenith" or sky is guarded by a multicolored eagle. The "nadir" or underworld by a black mole. The north by a yellow mountain lion, the west by a blue bear, the south by a red badger and the east by a white wolf.
This set will easily fit in the palm of your hand, yet each animal is well carved and wears an arrowhead offering bundle. The mountain lion is the largest of the animals and is 2" long. He is made of serpentine and has turquoise eyes. The bear is made of turquoise and has red coral eyes. The badger is made of pipestone and has turquoise eyes. The wolf is made of onyx and has turquoise eyes. (He is about the same length as the mountain lion.) The mole is made of jet and has no eyes and the eagle is made of zebra marble and has turquoise eyes. Offering bundles vary. Please refer to the images of each animal.
None of the animals are signed. Purchased five years ago and in our possession since that time.
