This fetish pot was acquired in Zuni in the 1980's by a prominent Zuni fetish dealer who purchased it from Edna. We added it to our personal collection in 2012. Over the years we have had seven or so Edna Leki (d.) pots in our collection, and though smaller in stature than some, this one is probably the oldest one we've owned.
The pot is 6" wide and 4 1/4" tall. The diameter of the opening is 4 1/2". There are a total of eight fetishes, consisting of wolves, bears, coyotes and foxes. The largest fetish is a 3 1/2" wolf; the smallest is a bear measuring 2". Each fetish has a complete offering bundle consisting of pink shell arrowhead with beading of turquoise and coral. The eyes of each animal are etched and inlaid of jet. All the fetishes are tied on with authentic sinew. The stones appear to be pipestone, and serpentine found stones which, again speaks to the age of the pot.
The jar has the requisite feeding hole and is encrusted with basalt, turquoise, azurite and other crushed stones. The overall color is gray with vivid flecks of blue.
Edna was the daughter of Teddy Weahkee (1890-1965) and is believed to be the first woman fetish carver. She and her sister, Mary Tsikewa (1919 - 1986) continued the tradition with their own familes. Edna's children, Dinah, Lena and Anderson Weahkee (d.) are also carvers who have passed their knowledge down to their children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Originally a jeweler, Edna assisted her father, Teddy, as he reached old age She and her father were the original makes of fetish pots that were not for ceremonial use. The pots, themselves were crafted by an Acoma potter. Edna then embellished them with crushed stone and various animals which she herself (and her father before her) carved. Edna lived her entire life in Zuni and passed away in 2003.
