"Longtime art dealers and art lovers David Austin Riggs and Darlene Meader Riggs take the reader on a loving journey into the artistry of Zuni fetish carvings. More than 300 lush photographs are accompanied by expert explanations of these tiny treasures. Whether you collect fetish carvings or just love them from afar, this book will provide much enjoyment. A must-have for the serious collector!"
NATIVE PEOPLES MAGAZINE, Nov/Dec, 2009
The outstanding contribution of Zuni Spirits is the larger than life size of the photos. Fetishes are hard to capture because they are small and shiny and depth of field is necessary to show detail. This book has full page photographs of many of the pieces. It also shows many fetishes from several angles, something nobody has done before. Finally, the book has a very interesting feature by current Zuni Governor Norman Cooeyate who carves with his wife Jacqueline Ghahate. Substantial space is devoted to his personal discussion of the gestation and process of creating an elaborate antler piece. He takes the reader through a step-by-step journey and shares his thoughts along the way."

And from a few of our collectors:
"I had very high expectations of this book and every one has been exceeded. The photos are exquisite, beautifully produced on black pages. The text generously shares some of Darlene and David's experiences in Zuni and on their journey as collectors. The book captures perfectly the special allure the carvings clearly have for so many around the world. Would make a GREAT gift for anyone interested in Zuni fetishes or just an excellent treat for yourself. Impossible to recommend too highly!"

"Reading your book is like taking a tour of a Zuni fetish museum only more up close and personal, and it is a tour that one can take again and again. David's photos are superb, and when coupled with Darlene's text, reflect their love not only for the carvings themselves, but for the Zuni people and their culture. Bravo!"

"Closest thing to being there.' Viewing Dave's photos is close to holding the carvings in your hands, right up to your face. Darlene's writing brings you in on their visits to Zuni and experiences meeting the carvers. I'm reading the book slowly to extend my enjoyment."

Our purpose in publishing this book is to share the artistry and beauty of Zuni fetishes. As collectors we appreciate the various reference books written about Zuni fetishes and they are all within easy reach of our desks. But the elements of Zuni fetishes that attract us, draw us in and take our breath away are missing in those kinds of publications. The nuances of the stone, the finesse of the carver and the physical elements of the immense symbolism, these are the things we want to share here.
The Governor of Zuni Pueblo, Norman Cooeyate, has written the introduction for the book and says, "ZUNI SPIRITS: A PORTFOLIO OF FINE ZUNI FETISH CARVINGS is a wonderful compilation of the talent residing in Halona Idiwan'a. Dave's photography and Darlene's writing thoroughly captures the details of each fetish, the beauty of every stone and the artistry of each carver. This book, different from all other fetish collector books, appropriately showcases the "ZUNI SPIRIT" in each fetish. It portrays the expansive talents of the A:shiwi carvers from the oldest to the youngest, from the old style to the newer creative styles and all those in between. One not only sees the spirit within the fetish, but also experiences the spirit of the carver."
